Heya, folks.
My newsfeed has been down for about 3 days now, and no one
seems to know why or when it will come back up. I can post to news,
but I can't read it.
So, could someone please forward news posts (if there are any)
concerning the FAQ to me?
(Also, if you see an article relevant to the digest, please
send it to the digest, at least until I get my feed up again.)
Thanks!

Anyone know if Advanced Gravis has an 800 number?
Also I forget if there was any (semi-)official word(of mouth)...
What is the ETA on the new GUS 3D???
Thanks guys,

Beyond the ultraworld of Ernest Y. Chuang:
>
> Hi. Do you happen to know why it seems impossible to have both
> SBOS and the line input working at the same time?
Because SBOS reset the i/o to line in off, micro off (till it is used) and
out on. A solution, or so i tought, would have been to turn the line in back
on, but read on.
> I just downloaded
> your gset program, hoping it would solve this problem, but apparently
> if I load SBOS and then run "gset lo", the SB emulation no longer
> functions.
And as you have noticed Twilight Zone have made the same application more
recently and it does the same thing (which is almost nothing if you check
the source i have included, and it is probably the same thing that TZ do -
as a side note, i dont see the point of doing that in assembler...).
Now what happen is that SBOS will disable itself when a GUS aware application
access certains commands of the GUS. Now dont quote me on that, but i
suppose they did that so that games who support SB and GUS wont be fooled by
SBOS. As soon as the program checks for a GUS, SBOS is disabled. So it is the
reason why Star Control II run exactly the same with SBOS or with GUS support.
> I contacted Gravis tech support a couple months ago,
> asking about why SBOS seems to disable the line input, but they
> couldn't give me an answer.
Simple: i dont think there is a way to read the i/o status, so they always
use the default: in off, mic off, out on in their applications (including the
windows driver). Now they could have put that in an environment variable if you
ask me...
Ciao,

Yesterday, I was on epas. I saw a file called AXELF.ARJ. I
wanted to download it, but instead of typing 'get', I typed 'del' and
deleted the file by mistake. I don't know what I was thiking about at
that moment, but I goofed real bad. I appologize.
To the person who uploaded the file: I know that the AXELF.ARJ is
the MOD file of AXEL-F. I don't know if it's the same AXEL-F that I have.
I can upload it myself. Heck, I'll upload it. Again, I'm sorry. I was a
bad mistake.

Well, I got my 6 DRAM chips (70ns, to match the ones on the board :) ) from:
Elkco Corporation
41 A North Main Street
N. Grafton, Massachusetts 01536
(508) 839-2111 fax:(508) 839-7753
I got 'em for US$3.85 each, and paid $7 for UPS Blue Label shipping (2nd day
air) to Arizona. I think ground shipping was $5. Anyway, my grand total for
6 70ns chips sent to AZ in 2 days was $31 even (including a 90 cent "mystery
surcharge" :) ). I would imagine 100ns being even cheaper, if you want 'em.
Not too bad, from what I've seen...

Subject: New GUS Owner With Questions
To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
I am now the proud owner of a GUS soundcard (1mb). I have some
questions that maybe the net.experts can help me with. If there
is an FAQ please point me to it :-)
I installed the 1.21 disks that came with the board. I also sent
in my registration card. Do I need to immediately download the
1.22 disks that I see in utoronto, or should I wait (those suckers
are big to ftp)? Should I just wait for 1.23? (I did load the
1.22 version of SBOS.)
I see a lot of stuff here about patches. What are they? What do I
do? How would I load them? Are they just windows, or do I care
even if I just run DOS?
Could some kind soul please define the various file formats
(mod, snd, wav, 699, voc, any others?) What are they? How are they
created, edited, played?
Thanks a lot for any information! Once again, if there is an FAQ
or Gravis documentation that has this information, just point me
in the right direction.

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
Well, after much help from the many fellow OPTI owners, I've reached the
conclusion that -you guessed it- I need a new motherboard. Right now it
seems to be the best solution to the problem. So would those of you who
opted for this method mind giving me some pointers to your favorite mail-
order establishment. Plenty in Comp Shopper, but I'd rather go with the
voice of experience.
For the most part, I've got the Intel 486-25, I've got the 8-meg o' simms.
I just need the full-size motherboard w/ BIOS. What should I expect to pay
for a sturdy board, preferably 256k cache.
Hey Thanks!

To: Ultrasound Daily Digest <ultrasound@dsd.es.com>
Awhile back, someone (or two) commented about problems with configuring
a GUS in a system with an Adaptec 1542B. Looking back over my archived
posts, I found only a comment regarding the early GUS "setup" program
causing problems due to its DMA poking. I never saw another followup
and hence am turning to the group for feedback as I am planning on getting
a 1542B for my machine to replace a different brand controller with which
I've had problems (NOT GUS related -- just buggy in general). Is anyone
using a 1542B as their primary controller and without difficulties?
Any special setups, limitations (sampling rates???), etc.?
Thanks in advance,

I think someone on the list wrote that a Gravis person told them that the
SBOS that would ship was brand new. I hope the drivers are also, and not
some disks that we already have!

It's true! Running the p669gu0.exe file and playing a 669 before playing
Star Control II somehow corrects most of the glitches associated with
using a 1 meg GUS. It's amazing how much better the mods sound now,
I had been playing them on my 1 meg card all along with the missing
instruments. Someone should mention this to Accolade, since the
669 player is public domain, they could pry it apart and figure
out what they did wrong perhaps.

I just uploaded to epas udox-20 which is the complement to ultradox 1.0.
If you are programming the GUS, check it out as it corrects and add some info
from udox #1. It was made by Renaissance.
I would like to take this message as an opportunity to give three cheers to:
Renaissance and its members, Twilight Zone and its members and all other
groups who are supporting the GUS. Thanks also goes to people who contribute
to our archive and our digest and the people who maintain them.
(No it's not the International GUS award 8) )
And last, i can predict you that in less than a month there will be an
explosion of GUS software (patches, demos, programs etc...). Just counting
what Gravis is supposed to release it's already a big chunk!
Oh and BTW, we need to think of a way to include patches with midi files.
Do you think Gravis should support sysex? Of course, the problem with sysex
is that it takes forever to load patches. A standard is needed ASAP!
Ciao,

There are obviously some problems with the windows drivers for the
card - loading patches with Cakewalk and WinJammer, and the volume
control. I want to get an updated Windows driver. I've tried the
wuarchive ftp site, but the disks are version 1.21 (same as the
software which arrived with my card). I've also tried connecting to
the Gravis BBS, but it's a dumb modem and couldn't figure out the
setup/rates etc.
So....
Is there a 100% correct and working Windows driver ?
Is the wuarchive site out of date ?
Or have new drivers not been added ?
What is the configuration of the Gravis BBS ?
Flames or anything - I just need to know !
And finally, to the British Guy (I should have recorded your name
before starting this message), I sent off for the extra patches in
November - and surprise, surprise, I haven't received them.

Well, with a little playing around, I managed to make wav2pat a bit more usable.
The patches seem to have only a small usable section, so I just create the
section where I think I will need it and then use cakewalk to transpose a track
up or down. This usually works ok. I wish the samples would stay the same length
as they went up and down. Aso of now, I can only get sustained notes on the low
end and the higher notes are almost inaudible because they are so short. I also
use pocket recorder to edit the sounds lower or higher before i convert them to
patterns. This chaotic info may be understandable to some, so enjoy if you
followed it.

allow you to select for a speech card. I can't get any music or digitized sound out of it . Has anyone
been able to get compatiblity with other sound cards using sbos.
Does anybody know when the new installation disk will be available because I am the only person
that has bought a GUS at the local Electronic Boutique and has kept . Everyone that has returned
said none of the games worked with SBOS(ver 1.20). Is there a policy that Gravis has about shipping
